Policy, Market and Stakeholder Analysis
The shift away from Coal-based power dependence in South Africa’s economy has been anticipated in the country’s first Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2010, which included a schedule for the decommissioning of Coal-fired power stations.
Despite this forward planning, the transition has become increasingly contested, as the effects of transition particularly on workers throughout the coal value chain have become better understood. New opportunities to achieve long-overdue socio-economic outcomes are also increasingly recognised. The country’s youth unemployment crisis occurs within a wider unemployment crisis, and it is likely that the transition will cause further job losses in the short term. Achieving Just outcomes requires determined, proactive and goal-driven policy, planning and implementation.
I undertake daily research into the changes underway within the South African electricity market and related policy. I also map the stakeholders active in South Africa’s energy transition. I combine these insights into reliable, up-to-date Policy, Market and Stakeholder analysis.
